The Pitt Shrine

About the Show

The Pitt's first season was released in early 2025, with 15 episodes each being aired weekly at peak time. Each episode is one hour in a 15hr shift in the Pittsburg Trauma Medical Center's Emergency Department. It's the first day for two med students and two resident interns — having it be the first day and getting to follow these characters is a really good way to introduce the viewers to the Pitt, as well as to certain medical aspects (it being a teaching hospital means that they have to talk through what their doing and there's lots of chance to involve the higher ups). The standard 12hr shift becomes 15 thanks to a mass casualty event so we see the worst of the worst amongst the joy and play and love that radiates through the ER.

Knowing that each actor got an in-depth backstory before hand makes so much sense with how real and connected these characters feel. Over the course of 15hrs we get to see patients that in some ways expose a bit of each main characters' history — such as Mohan treating an addict and Langdon's behaviour throughout the show. It feels so organic but it's awesome to see those exact parallels drawn by fans. Also often the parallels between certain characters and what they say to other. I saw an awesome video that was Robby telling Mohan off for all the things she's doing wrong alongside him doing those exact things. Similarly, we get to see ho'oponopono throughout.

Gotta take a second to commend the medical accury of the show as well. It has been praised by many medical professionals for both getting procedures and medcine correct but for also showing off the life-like dynamics, experiences, and feelings of ER staff. Of course it isn't perfect — I immediately jumped the inaccurate CPR, but no medical show has truely accurate CPR as it could kill a person... but it knows it's stuff. The dedication, like making sure camera crew were wearing scrubs just incase they were accidently on-screen, is something to be admire. The show really stands up on steady two legs. Not needing an epic score, it speaks for itself. The writing is so compelling, and so I'm really excited to see what season 2 gives us.

a collage of all the main characters in The Pitt

Main Characters

Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch

Robby is the attending for the day shift, the character we start the show with, and by all intents and purposes the main character. We get to see into his past more than any of the other character through his family, past relationships, and with flashbacks to the COVID-19 pandemic. The shift of the first season is the anniversary of the death of his mentor, who we see dying during the pandemic. Through these flashbacks we start to understand the state of Robby's mental wellbeing. Showing this aspect of him alongside his intense leadership and care is really vital for showing the weight that doctors carry, particularly when they are leading a pack and teaching and simply incapable of asking for help. I won't go into detail about all aspects of his character, having a conversation about his ingrained misogynistic biases integrel to understanding him. Similarly, his clear favouritism towards male staff (Landgon then Whitaker in a prodigal)... needs to be recognised. I hope he takes a day off soon lmao.

Dr. Heather Collins

Collins is an R4 who is such a good doctor and her story is so sad. Knowing she was trying for a pregnancy was a checkov's gun if I've ever seen one. I love how much balance she brings to the ER but I know that's because she is not afforded the grace to break down in the same way the white men around can. I love her friendship with Dana and the nurses. She will be missed in season 2.

Dr. Frank Langdon

Langdon is also an R4. Known as the ER Ken (cause he's such a pretty boy /derogatory), he starts out as clearly the prodical favourite of Robby. That devolves with Santos' discovery of his drug usage. He was fighting demons, but I am still a hater. I really recommend this post that articulates really well his sexism and general entitlement.

Dana Evans

Dana, my beloved, the best woman in the world, the glue that holds the shitshow together. As the charge nurse she is the one that runs that ship like the navy, that gives grace to the newbies and get through to all the residents, and who really seems to try and juggle everything in a way that even Robby doesn't.

Dr. Samira Mohan

Mohan is an R3 that is known for being slow (aka considerate about patients) but so good. I love that she feels like such a pair of fresh eyes in comparison to the other senior staff. She and Robby's tension is something I highlighted earlier as being a brilliant way of showing how they mirror each other. She doesn't buckle under his scrutiny, nor does she explosively push back. We get a touch of her history and I'd love to know more about her outside of her work. Although, by the sounds of it, she doesn't have much currently going on outside her work. Her representing someone who devots themself so utterly to work at the clear detriment of their "real life". I'm sure she'll be more well adjust in season 2...

Dr. Cassie McKay

McKay is an R2 that is really solid in herself. We see her mostly on chairs (attending to those that have walked into the ER) where we understand her skill of socialising with those who may be in challenging situations and how she can flag worrying situations — such as a potential shooter or someone who's being trafficked. Her background as a single mother, former addict, and having done something resulting in her wearing an ankle monitor, creates a really multifacited character who is driven by her life experiences. This leads to a confrontation with Robby about someone she believes to be a danger to others. Her girlboss energy sometimes seems a little intense, but even have a brief look into her background helps to create a lot of support for her and her decisions.

Dr. Mel King

Mel is a R2 doing her first day in the pitt and she slays. The best AuDHD representation I have ever seen intentionally on television. From my understanding Mel is autistic but her actor is ADHD, although it's never said but her sister (who Mel is the primary caregiver for) being autisic, her ability to connect with an autistic patient, and her behaviour (certain self soothing habits, social interation problems, etc) all indicate to me that she is autistic. She's so smart and so lovely and simply the best person in the show. Her kindness is something I wish to cultivate in myself and see more of in the world. Also her idea to start donating!! Epic.

Dr. Trinity Santos

Santos is an R1 intern who packs a lot of punch. She's such a compelling character that clearly has a lot to her but has a lot to her that she tries to hide. I love the scene where says she has thick skin, gets torn to shreds, and then is upset. I feel like it would have been easy for her to be a brash asshole and stay that way. To become more jaded and continue to bully the other newbies and suck up to the established pitt crew but no. She helps Whitaker out with his housing situation, she doesn't taking reporting Langdon lightly, she doesn't take joy in it but she's doing her job. And sometimes she doesn't do her job if she thinks it's unjust. Robby's decision to report a mother that is poisoning her husband who she thinks is grooming their daughter is seen as backwards by her so she threatens the father to make sure he turns himself in.

Dennis Whitaker

My little wet gerbil of twink. Dennis is a fourth year med student who is just a sopping wet kitten of man, on first glance. The sudden death of one of his first patients is really brutal for him but there is such a resiliance to him. It's not the kind of boundless optimism that we see in someone like Mel, nor the suffering grit from Robby, but a quiet understanding that this is his work — maybe like Robby sees, a naivety. His farm-boy Christian background is something so integrel to his character as it allows him to connect with certain characters in certain ways, we see this particuarly with Robby during his *moment* and is almost the backbone of their ship. Also his friendship with Santos is everything! The lesbian to gay solidarity, the sibling dynamic, the fact that he can stand his ground when she makes fun of him but crumbles around everyone else, is wonderful.

Victoria Javadi

Javadi is a third year medical student who is quite timid but inredibly smart and sometimes puts her vivid medical knowledge over considering the social needs of her patients — book smart neglecting the street smart. But mking this mistake sees her corrected (somewhat harshly) by McKay, and subsequently she improves and gets closer to McKay because it. Being the youngest also sees her initially dismissed by some, like Santos, and this is exaserbated by her mum being one of the surgeons. It's great that she gets to prove herself and stand up to her mum later in the season. She's still the resident baby girl fr though.

Other Characters

The Nurses

So lovely, truly all of the nurses are awesome. Shout out to Princess, Perlah, Jesse, and Donnie. They have the immense job of keeping the doctors in check and clearling up (metaphorically and sometimes literally) after them. Mateo over there is such a cutiepie. I love Princess and Perlah speaking Tagalog and gossiping. The nurses really are the invisible backbone of the ER.

The Doctors

We get to see some of the night team thanks to the mass casualty event. Abbot is the attending for them and clearly someone who is very close to Robby as we see him in the first episode on the roof. The friendship between them is very precious to me, it's clear that they care a lot about each other, even if they only see each other for a few brief moments at the change of every shift. For the last few days I've just been hearing in my head him saying you rocked that shit down there tonight. The sexist thing is when we see he's tied a blood bag to his leg so he can work and donate,, soooo sexy, hot man behaviour (the charaisma, slight rule braking, and grey hair also might have something to do with it...). Also the amputee and vetern rep! So swag. Of course shout out to Shen. Your iced cofffee will always be iconic. And Dr. Ellis... hit me up. I mean- I truly love the energy of the night crew, they're like a slightly unhinged and slightly hotter version of the day pitt crew.

Ships

Check out my AO3 shrine to see which of these fics I read the most fanfics about! And my tumblr to see all the amazing fanart of these ships (including some hucklerobby fanart I've made).

Favourites

Robby x Whitakar / x Abbot / x Abbot x Whitakar

Hucklerobby, as it's known, is definately my top ship. The show's choice for Robby to continally man-handle Whitakar is kinda inexplainable so clearly,, the true reason must be Robby's (subconcious) affection for Whitakar. This gif set really explains their dynamic and the desire to ship them well. There are lots of different ways you can hash their dynamic: Robby in need of Whitaker's optimism, Robby wanting to be in control and Whitaker folding under him, Whitaker taking control (predatory Whitaker my beloved), Robby being simply evil, Robby being so incredibly guilty,, the list goes on. I love intense and unequal power dynamic relationships so the age gpa and teacher/student of it all is so delicious for me.

Robby and Abbot are so good, make so much sense, and are simply perfect together. Middle-aged, undernegotiated, gays!! Having Robby's biblical suffering contrasted with Abbot's suffering that he actually handles is so lovely and kind of tragic. Then add in a twink! boom.

Others

Mel x Langdon

I am such a Landon hater and Mel lover that I don't like this ship. I don't like idea of Langdon leaving his wife and kids for her, cause I don't think Mel would fw that.. I think partially I like intense power dynamics and this ship isn't it. Also straight ships... However, I do like the idea of him being in an open relationship with his wife and Mel kinda leaning ace like in this fic where he also gets a spanking from Robby.

Robby x Collins / x Langdon

I do definitely think Collins and Robby have an intense and long history together. Of course there is the ambulance scene where we pretty much know that Collins became pregnant when with Robby without him knowing. I do completely understand the pairing but have no pull towards it.

I like the idea that Robby was with Langdon in some capacity. Maybe it was never more than the touches we see him give Whitaker, but either way I do think the favouritism also explains the massive crash out and fights they end up having. I'm very excited to see how Robby reacts to his return next season.

Santos x Garcia / any woman ever

I love Santos' lesbian energy and the flirting and immediate favouritism towards her by Garcia. I've seen some very compelling Santos x Ellis stuff which I think would rock. I've also seen some cute stuff about her and the other newbies. I've even seen her and Dennis in a platonic genderfuck kind of way and I love it all. I don't engage with it directly too much which is why she's not in the favourites section but don't get me wrong, she's sexy and I love her.

If I haven't talked about a ship it's because I don't like it and don't have anything to say about it...
