WATCHED: (film) After Life (1998) - dir. Hirokazu Kore-eda

sky blue background with 5 people stoically standing and the purple text of after life I love quiet films!! I love films that are focused on interpersonal relationships! I loved this so much and it is now one of my favourites!!! So this film is a mix of reality and fiction, I would suggest going in completely blind so go watch it now. I find it so cool that some of the stories and interviews were real, that during the casting process they got older people to talk about their actual lives and memories they might choose for this process and some of those were chosen for the film. I don't know how many, regardless there is so much tenderness from each person. Particularly the older cast members, the way they spoke about their memories and had the opportunity to relive them was beautiful to watch.

The way the "plot" was revealed to us was very organic feeling and the in world week that we see feels like just a small snippet into this job the main cast have to carry out. I loved how the man-made aspect of it becomes more revealed, the way they make the films, or the change in the moon. I reviewed Blue a little while ago and it had a similar vibe, where we are observing people in a certain time of their existance. I love these kinds of slow, music-less, films. I also thought this was such a creative and sweet take on death and moving forward and I crave to know more about the lore. However, I think part of the charm is that so much is left unsaid. The small snapshot with so little exposition and in some ways little "pay off". Like we don't see the final films the crew makes (apart from one) and although I understand why this could be frustating, the final product isn't really the point. I felt it as more about the process of sifting through memories and recreating them, the final films are in some way moot.

The ending was truly fantastic. I'm excited to rewatch it and notice new things, and just sit in that world again. I've only seen this film by this director but he has quite a few more highly rated films than After Life and so I need to watch them too. I just love the way it was shot and would love to see how he brings stories to life that results in such a personal connection to each person and the environment that I felt watching After Life.
