READ: (Book) The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry (2014) - Gabrielle Zevin

I really enjoyed this book! This is the second Zevin I've read after reading Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow a few years ago. It became one of my favourite books and so when I heard Ariel Bissett recommend this other book of hers (on the Books Unbound podcast) I remembered it when I saw it in a charity shop. Although her latest book is my favourite I really did enjoy this one.

I really hope it wasn't a romance when it started and to call it such, although that was quite a feature, would be reductive. I think Maya and her relationship with A.J. is the most important in the book. The exploration of what it's like to be a parent in the way A.J. becomes one is so interesting. I really think it is somewhat the point, just keeping in mind the final chapter (I nearly cried).

The way that each chapter opens is so cool! Again, it only becomes clear later on why A.J. is writing and who he is writing to. I do want to go back and look up each book and maybe add them to my TBR (not that I really have one). I really like Zevin's writing and the amount that becomes revealed. I do think it's somewhat fantastical, the turn of events is a bit odd and possibly unbelievable — tbf I don't know how the foster and adpotion system works nor do I understand anything about being a book seller, police chief, or English teacher. I might also agree that it reads a bit more like a YA than T&T&T but maybe that's because there is a sizable distance in page count. Maybe that's because of the unbelieveable-ness of it but perhaps people think that because it's easy to read? But that just means it's actually help me finish it because it is so direct.
